The time has come…for 13 more queens to enter the battle of the broads to become America’s Next Drag Superstar! You already know this is legit my favorite show on television, so I am ALL IN and very excited for this season and it is finally here and I couldn’t be happier. It’s the first episode of the new season, so we get to meet the queens and instantly judge how we think they are doing! I’m in a league with some friends (named #JusticeForKatya) so I am most excited to see how I do each week!
The episode begins as most season premieres in the past: the entrance lines. We finally get the hear each queens first attempt at coining a catchphrase that they can put on shirts and sell on their website. (See: every Drag Race girl ever…) Some of my favorites were:
Oh my gosh! Heeeeey!
– Peppermint – In a blue kimono, braids and baby hairs this NYC legend was first into the workroom and had the most casual entrance line I’ve ever heard. I loved it.
AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! *cough cough*
– Sasha Velour – Walking in wearing a beaded black dress and black crown, this Brooklyn queen slayed me with her entrance. None of the other queens may have liked it, but I thought it was so funny and so Sasha.
Shoutout to my favorite quote of the night:
“Is this real or is this fake” – Eureka
“From the foot up its all real!” – Jaymes
“I meant your personality…” – Eureka
The 13 queens enter and chat and dive right into throwing shade at each other when a surprise 14th queen struts in serving her best Lady Gaga realness. Oh wait. Nope. That’s actually Gaga. She is the guest judge and (Untucked life coach) for this episode and in true Gaga fashion, makes quite an entrance. She talks with the girls a bit then Ru enters in a lemon yellow suit to tell the girls their first challenge will be a pageant. Miss Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve & Talent will be crowned after seeing all the girls’ looks inspired by their hometowns and by an iconic Lady Gaga moment.
Ru and Gaga leave the queens to it and we get a first chance to see these girls show off their drag. The first runway featured a lot of creative and out-there interpretations of their hometowns. My favorites were Peppermint in her gorgeous take on the Statue of Liberty, Valentina’s latina explosion and if only because I can’t believe she chose this look as her first runway, Shea Coulee coming out with a damn hot dog on her head…
Obviously, Miss Nina Bonina Brown had quite a look coming out like she just bit into a peach flavored Gusher. That was instantly a legendary look. Then we move on to the queens Gaga-inspired looks and these ran the spectrum from the weird to the glam! I am just so happy there were no repeat outfits here! (I’m looking at you, Season 8 girls…) My favorites were Valentina in the outfit Gaga wore to the 2011 CFDA Awards, Sasha doing her best Art Pop look and Trinity as Gaga in American Horror Story: Hotel. I have never been so disappointed in a runway look than by Farrah having a complete reveal look underneath that smock and NOT REVEALING IT! Such a missed opportunity there.
The girls untuck – more on that later – and the judges deliberate their looks and pick a top three. Sasha, Eureka and Nina are their picks and eventually Ru crowns Nina Miss Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent. Here is a good time for me to talk about Nina. While I was very impressed with her looks this episode, I have been keeping my eye on her since the Ruveal and I am not a big fan. Her looks for this episode were done with a very careful eye and attention to detail, which is something I do not see on her Instagram. I am certain she is going to make it far into the competition based on the effort she puts into her looks, but I am just not too excited about that.
ANYWAYS. I am still most excited to see more from Sasha, Peppermint, Valentina (as long as she stops her whole “Can I just say something?” campaign) and Eureka. But my favorite so far (and potential Miss Congeniality winner?) is Alexis Michelle. Her entrance look as well as her Gaga look were flawless. I love her look and makeup and personality a lot!
The episode ends in quite a cliffhanger as Ru announces the competition has only just begun! (Then why did we just have a pageant?) A 14th queen will be entering the competition. And if the Nancy Drews of Reddit are correct, I am not happy about it.
This week’s Untucked (the Drag Race bonus show on YouTube showing the girls all relaxing and chatting backstage while the judges deliberate) was fantastic. I may have liked it better than the episode itself? I definitely enjoyed the chance to get to hear more out of the girls and will say most of my first impressions of them are spot on so far. Jaymes bothers me so much and I am clearly not the only one. I am also slightly turned off by Charlie Hides? I have never loved anything Gaga has done more than walk into that backstage area with a purple folder of notes for the queens. That was iconic and hilarious and I loved every minute of it. I loved her notes for the girls and agreed with 99% of what she had to say. It was a great moment of criticism for the girls that I am certain meant more to them than any of us know.
We will just have to tune in next week to find out who the 14th queen is and who will be the Victoria Parker of Season 9 and get sent home first. I am excited for next week mostly to see the girls compete under pressure. My biggest issue with this episode was the lack of stakes. Ru announcing that no girl would go home tonight made the whole runway very anti-climactic. And as much of a star as Gaga is (I am admittedly not a Little Monster) I would much rather had less screen time of her and given us a chance to get to know these girls better.
Also, for a fun graphic, I put together this little scorecard (not the right name for it, but I was never into sports) so each week I could cross off the girls that have gone home and now I have to add another girl in which throws off the whole aesthetic, but WHATEVER. No X’s this episode anyways. See y’all next week!
Did you watch this week? Who are your favorites? Least favorites? What are you most looking forward to this season?
