Sundae Co. (Attempts To) Predict the Oscars!

Every year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences awards the best of the best in cinema. And every year, we the general public spew out our opinions on who should and will win as if we have any say in the matter. We here at Sundae Co. are joining the ranks of said “non-Hollywood types” and compiling our list of who we think will take home that coveted golden, nude statuette on February 26th! Plus who we think actually deserves to win. And we’re skipping those categories we feel we don’t know anything about. (Sorry Sound Mixing…) So, below are our picks and reasons for them. No money is on the line, but if we get at least half of these predictions correct we are both quitting our jobs and opening up a fortune telling booth in Venice Beach, so wish us luck.

Best Picture
Sundae Co. | Best Picture
Should Win: Moonlight
Will Win: La La Land
While La La Land seems to be sweeping up the major awards at most ceremonies, we are gunning for a win here for Moonlight! This movie, especially at this time, deserves top honors without a doubt!
Who DID win: Moonlight! In a shocking twist ending that would leave even M. Night Shyamalan’s head spinning, Warren Beatty was handed the wrong envelope and announced “La La Land” as the night’s big winner. Only after producers rushed the stage, do they announce that the award actually goes to “Moonlight!” The look on Emma Stone’s face was…a lot. I am incredibly happy “Moonlight” won and just hope they get to enjoy the moment and not be tainted by “scandal” reports!

Actor in a Leading Role
Sundae Co. | Best Actor
Should Win: Denzel Washington
Will Win: Casey Affleck
We all know why Casey shouldn’t be honored on the 26th, but we think he’ll win, despite Denzel’s incredible performance in Fences.
Who DID win: Case Affleck. Ugh.

Actress in a Leading Role
Sundae Co. | Best Actress
Should Win: Natalie Portman
Will Win: Natalie Portman
All of these nominees gave incredible performances in their roles, but we’re pretty sure (a very pregnant) Natalie will take home the Oscar for her emotional and humanizing portrayal of Jackie O.
Who DID win: Emma Stone. I don’t know…

Actor in a Supporting Role
Sundae Co. | Best Sup Actor
Should Win: Mahershala Ali
Will Win: Mahershala Ali
I mean. Do we have to say anything? He’s friggin’ incredible and deserves this win so much!
Who DID win: Mahershala Ali. So incredibly happy for him.

Actress in a Supporting Role
Sundae Co. | Best Sup Actress
Should Win: Viola Davis
Will Win: Viola Davis
Again. No comment necessary. We just can’t wait to hear her, no doubt, powerful acceptance speech!
Who DID win: Viola Davis gave us yet another powerful and moving acceptance speech!

Animated Feature Film:
Sundae Co. | Best Animated
Should Win: Zootopia
Will Win: Zootopia
Despite the love for Disney’s Moana, we think Zootopia (one of Ross’ picks for best movies of 2016) will come ahead and take home the Oscar.
Who DID win: “Zootopia” took the top animated prize!

Costume Design
Sundae Co. | Costume
Should Win: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Will Win: Jackie
The costuming may have been my favorite part of Fantastic Beasts, but I see the Academy giving it to Madeline Fontaine for her immaculate recreations of Jackie’s clothing for the film.
Who DID win: Colleen Atwood took home another Oscar for her work on “Fantastic Beasts…”

Sundae Co. | Directing
Should Win: Barry Jenkins, Moonlight
Will Win: Damien Chazelle, La La Land
Chazelle has been collecting this honor at other award shows for his bravery in bringing back the musical. (Catch my sarcasm there?) I think Jenkins’ work on Moonlight far surpasses his, but the Academy will likely give it to La La Land‘s director.
Who DID win: Damien Chazelle became the youngest director to be awarded this honor.

Sundae Co. | Docu
Should Win: 13th
Will Win: 13th
Ava DuVernay’s eye-opening and important doc on the history of racial inequality in the US is powerful enough to take the award in this category, hands down.
Who DID win: Damn. OJ Is having one hell of a year! “OJ: Made in America” beat out “The 13th” in a shocking win for ESPN.

Makeup & Hairstyling
Sundae Co. | Makeup & Hair
Should Win: Star Trek Beyond
Will Win: Star Trek Beyond
Suicide Squad could sneak up and steal this one, but the impressive makeup work in Star Trek should definitely win the Oscar.
Who DID win: Well… I guess Hollywood wanted to throw this critical disaster a bone? “Suicide Squad” won an Oscar.

Visual Effects
Sundae Co. | Visual Effects
Should Win: Jungle Book
Will Win: Jungle Book
I honestly wasn’t blown away by the movie, but the visual effects in this film were pretty astounding. But it’s a toss-up between this movie and Doctor Strange which would be a big get for Marvel.
Who DID win: “The Jungle Book” and it’s impressive visual effects won them an Oscar.

Adapted Screenplay
Sundae Co. | Adapted Screenplay
Should Win: Moonlight
Will Win: Moonlight
The impressive story behind the making of this movie and the writing of the screenplay should be enough to edge it out in front of the other films up for this category.
Who DID win: Another well-deserved win for “Moonlight.”

Original Screenplay
Sundae Co. | Original Screenplay
Should Win: The Lobster
Will Win: 20th Century Women
The Lobster is one of the most inventive and odd films I have ever seen. The world created by writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos is so out there, that to see it win would make me really happy. However, I think the Academy will throw 20th Century Women a win considering their lack of any other nominations this year.
Who DID win: “Manchester by the Sea” which I actually am not mad at. That script is pretty amazing.

So, those are our picks. Let’s all tune in February 26th @ 7pm EST on ABC and see how we did! Let us know your picks in the comments below and play along! Also, be sure to follow us on Twitter @sundaecoblog for some good ole’ fashioned Oscar live tweets!

Update: I guessed 7 out of 9 wins correctly! I may take up gambling…
